Muskogee Central High Class of 1967

Still "Doin' It" after all these years (breathing)

Where were you when you first heard the song "Okie from Muskogee?"
How has that song impacted your life?

If you don't want to answer this in public, you can e-mail me at frances49er@yahoo.com.
This is not a formal survey or scientific study, but could be a precursor for future research. Mostly I'm just curious.

I was in Southern California and had to wear my class ring and carry my miniature diploma wallet card in order to prove to people that there really was such a place. People thought I was lying when I told them where I was from.

I was in a bar with the Marine I later married. He played the song on the jukebox just to irritate me. I ran to the bathroom when the song played as everyone hooted and hollered and pointed at me! Then to get even I played the Marine Corps hymn and we ended up doing a dance that was somewhere between a polka and a square dance.

When I teach alcohol ed classes for minors in Huntsville, TX, it surprises me that many of the college kids STILL know that song. Most of them have heard take-offs of the song when local artists do their own take on the song.

When my ex-husband was being sworn in as an employee for the city of Muskogee, he talked about how strange it felt. He said if anyone would have told him in 1970 that he would be standing in the Police department in Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA, taking an oath of office to uphold the laws of the city and state that he would NEVER have believed them.

My current husband was only 6 when the song came out. He used to tell people he was going to marry An Okie from Muskogee. He did. And now we are trying to move back to Oklahoma. Who would of thought it!
I was in Canton Ohio 1969, Listening WLS on the skip....and heard just a little ...Okie from Muskogee? You gotta be kidding...so I bought the 45 when I found it....
My husband always tells people that "for real...they can say they have actually met an Okie from Muskogee. We have a personalized plate on our Audi TT that says OKIENOH....Okie in Ohio!!!! (He grew up in OKC and is an OU grad) I'm actually proud to say I am an Okie...and we will go back someday.

The first time I ever heard "Okie from Muskogee" I was shopping for a used car in a little town on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.

The little Phillipino salesman told me that that was his favorite song, and when I told him Muskogee was my home town, he knocked $200 dollars off the price of the old junker I bought from him.

A Philipino country and western fan living in Hawaii. Who would have thought!
I was at the Pi Beta Phi House (AKA The Butt Hut) at OSU.
Only six. You cougar! LOL
